Svādhyāya is a Niyama in yogic philosophy, meaning the study of the Self. It is the practice of self-inquiry and self-reflection, inviting us to look within and discover our true nature beyond the mind and ego.
Svādhyāya is the path of self-remembrance—returning again and again to the truth of who you are
Svādhyāya asks:
Who am I beyond my thoughts?
What patterns am I repeating?
What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?
Through honest self-reflection, we begin to see ourselves clearly and compassionately.
Traditionally, Svādhyāya also includes the study of sacred teachings and spiritual texts, not simply to gain knowledge, but to recognize deeper truth within oneself.
Through scripture, contemplation, meditation, and lived reflection, outer wisdom becomes inner wisdom.
Over time, Svādhyāya evolves
... from a practice into a way of being:
Your thoughts become teachings
Your patterns become reflections
Your life becomes sacred text
This is not about fixing yourself.
It is about seeing yourself clearly.
As awareness deepens, layers of conditioning begin to dissolve, false identities soften, and the wisdom of your authentic Self can emerge.
Who Is This For
This meditation retreat is for those who feel:
*overwhelmed or exhausted by internal or external noise
*disconnected from their own clarity, intuition, or deeper truth
*caught in cycles of overthinking, seeking, healing, or trying to “figure it all out”
*ready to move beyond constant mental processing into embodied wisdom
*called to slow down, listen deeply, and reconnect with themselves
*curious about yogic philosophy, self-inquiry, and spiritual growth
*at a threshold of personal transformation, seeking clarity around purpose, identity, or direction
*drawn to stillness, nature, and sacred practices as pathways to healing
*ready to release conditioned patterns and remember their authentic self
You do not need prior meditation experience.
Only a willingness to be present.
Self-inquiry reveals who you are.
Wisdom reveals what is true.
Dharma reveals how to live it.
What You Will Gain
Contribution for Retreat
We ask for a DAKSHINA for this sacred retreat.
*NOTE: the Dakshina is only in exchange for the 1-3+ spiritual practices offered daily by Shivananda Swamiji. If you would like to stay (room and board) at the City of New Light | Monte Sacro, please contact us for details.
Dakshina is the act of giving from a place of inner recognition.
Traditionally, Dakshina is offered to a teacher, a guide, or a sacred space—not to "repay" them, because what is given in wisdom cannot be priced—but to honor the exchange and keep the flow of energy alive.
It is what arises when something within you has been touched—when knowledge, guidance, presence, or truth has shifted you in a real way. Rather than payment, it is a chosen offering from the heart. A quiet acknowledgment that says: I have received, and I choose to give in return—not out of obligation, but fullness.
Dakshina is reciprocity without measure.
It is gratitude made tangible.
It is giving that reflects not the value of the service, but the sincerity of the heart.
It also asks something deeper of the giver—presence, honesty, and self-responsibility.
Not "What is expected?" but "What feels true to give?"
In this way, Dakshina becomes a practice in itself.
A mirror of one's relationship to abundance, worth, and receiving.
And when offered with awareness, it nourishes both directions—
the one who gives, and the one who holds space.
